Manupulating your timesheet to increase your earning can put you behind bars. According to latest news on mcall.com, Charles Wistuba Jr., 40, of Newton, N.J., was sentenced by Superior Court Judge John Pursel to five years in state prison on two counts of theft by deception. Wistuba increased his overtime earnings on his online time sheet at a rate of 24 hours a day, seven days a week to obtain $336,348. Wistuba also used a vender number to charge his credit card bills to JCP&L to obtain $76,294.50, the affidavit said. Click here for more details.

I had to laugh at this one. If this is true then I guess I should have been locked up a long time ago. I worked for this company once that forced us to record our time to the nearest 15 minutes and we had hundreds of clients at the time so if you can imagine dividing up the client by activity for lots of short jobs during the day, the weekly time sheet was a royal pain!

Alas – I am one of the lucky few who no longer have to do time sheets – being self employed has its advantages!
Timesheets can be abused like anything else, and they can be burdensome. What we did with Pacific Timesheet is set up our time as recurring, then just enter exceptions. This doesn’t work for all employees, but for the the bulk it makes life easier. Another really excellent module we added was IVR (voice recognition over the telephone), so our mobile employees can record their time hands-free. In this way no changes need to be made to the timesheets except for corrections.
